The Livable Space —
insights for homes that should work better.

Most homes in Ontario were designed for efficiency and lot size. Not for how your family actually lives. This is where we explore the gap between the two — and what to do about it.

Builders design for the average family.
There is no average family.

A note from the Detail Dezigns team

Builders do something genuinely difficult — they create homes at scale that meet code, work for a wide range of buyers, and hold their value. That requires compromise, and they make those compromises thoughtfully.

But a home designed for the average household in 2005 is not always the right home for a specific family in 2026. Families grow. Work patterns shift. Three generations sometimes share one roof. A home designed for two empty nesters is asked to become something else entirely.

The Livable Space exists for the homeowner who senses that something about their home is not quite working — but can't always name what it is. We try to name it for them. Then show what's possible.

Most homes that aren't working fall into one of five patterns.

The Space Audit identifies which pattern applies to your home — and what that means for how you renovate it.

The Growing Family Pattern
For families whose home was designed before the children, the homework, and the beautiful daily chaos.
The Multi-Life Pattern
For multigenerational households sharing a space built for one way of living.
The Evolution Gap Pattern
For couples and individuals whose life has changed faster than their home has.
The Independence Tension Pattern
For families with teenagers navigating autonomy within a shared home.
The Reclaimed Space Pattern
For empty nesters rediscovering what their home can become.
